چکیده

The acceleration of urbanization and rapid development of economy led to making surface water pollution problem becoming more critical. Water treatment technologies can be generally classified as insitu or ex-situ. In this paper, a comprehensive review describing the latest surface water remediation developments and technologies that can be suitable for in-situ applications. The review covers the related researches on river pollution control and remediation systems , however, more weight was given to bioremediation technologies (i.e. remediation using aquatic plants, remediation using aquatic animals, and Microbial Remediation) as one of the effective ways to deal with the pollution of natural water. At the moment, it was concluded that approaches to alleviate the river pollution problem should utilize the bioremediation as the primary technique, followed by the physical and chemical remediation as the supplementary means. Applying those methods for other polluted surface waters such as agricultural drainage water is recommended as well.

Cellulose Acetate Nanofiltration Membranes for Cadmium Remediation

In this work, cellulose acetate (CA) nanofiltration (NF) membranes were prepared via non-solvent phase inversion technique (NIPS). Polymer concentration was varied from 22 to 25 wt% in order to study its effect on the membrane properties. The fabricated membranes were characterized in terms of morphological analysis using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), contact angle, water content, water p...

In Situ Remediation of Arsenic in Contaminated Soils

Owing to its toxic nature and relative abundance, arsenic is a common contaminant of concern in environmental cleanup. Arsenic is identified as a constituent of concern at 728 National Priorities List (NPL) sites as of fiscal year 1998, and arsenic in soil is specifically identified at 32 percent of these sites (Fiedler, 2001). Exposure to arsenic has been linked to a variety of cancers, cardio...

Remediation of heavy metals in drinking water and wastewater treatment systems: Processes and applications

In small quantities, certain heavy metals are nutritionally essential for a healthy life. The heavy metals linked most often to human poisoning are lead, mercury, arsenic and cadmium. Other heavy metals, including copper, zinc and chromium are actually required by the body in small amounts, but can also be toxic in larger doses. They have the ability of dissolving in wastewaters and when discha...

Application of Phytoremediation to Reduce Environmental Pollution of Copper Smelting and Refinery Factories: a Review

Copper smelting and refinery factories are the final stages of a pyrometallurgical processing chain, and they cause many environmental challenges around the world. One of the most common environmental problems of these factories is toxic emissions. These toxic gases have harmful effects on the vegetation, animal species, soils, and water resources around the factories. Phytoremediation can play...

A review on enhancement techniques of electrokinetic soil remediation

During the last decade, the expansion of urbanization and industrial activities caused serious environmental problems such as soil pollution. Novel technologies are required to remediate soil contamination with toxic contaminants, including heavy metals and organic pollutants. In recent years, there have been increasing attempts to improve soil remediation efficiency. Electrokinetic (EK) is an ...
